Volvo's New River Valley Plant Launches VNR Under Third-Generation Family Leader
Key Details Volvo Trucks North America began serial production of its redesigned VNR regional-haul tractor in February at the New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia. The facility underwent a $400 million overhaul ahead of launching both the VNR and the updated VNL longhaul model, supporting Volvo's goal to capture 25% of the North American heavy-duty truck market by 2030. Leadership Legacy General Manager Marcus Minkkinen, a third-generation Volvo employee, now oversees the plant. Minkkinen, his father, and his grandfather all worked at Volvo's Skovde foundry in Sweden, where the company's first foundry opened in 1868 and its first engine was produced in 1907. Minkkinen joined Volvo in 2004, continuing a family tradition spanning decades. Why It Matters Minkkinen emphasizes teamwork and collaboration as central to the plant's success, comparing factory operations to team sports rather than individual competition. New River Valley celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 and now operates two highly automated facilities, with Plant 2 representing Volvo Trucks' most advanced manufacturing technology globally. A third tractor launch is expected in coming quarters.
