Key Details Tennessee Department of Transportation announced the Memphis/West Tennessee Smart Freight Corridor Pilot on March 27. The multi-year test will evaluate connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) freight technologies along I-40 between Memphis and Blue Oval City in partnership with private company Cavnue, LLC. Project planning begins soon, with the pilot running through 2028. Why This Location TDOT selected this corridor due to rapid industrial growth in West Tennessee and major investments around Blue Oval City. The I-40 stretch represents one of the state's busiest freight routes, making it ideal for real-world testing conditions. What's at Stake The pilot will generate critical data on how new freight technologies can improve efficiency, safety, and infrastructure performance. Tennessee officials view this as essential preparation for modernizing the state's long-term freight strategy and keeping infrastructure competitive with industry demands.
