South Korean Shipyard Lands First Navy Contract at Philadelphia Facility
Key Details Hanwha Defense USA and Hanwha Philly Shipyard have secured their first U.S. Navy contract as design subcontractors to Norwegian shipbuilder Vard Group. The partnership focuses on the Next Generation Logistics Ship (NGLS) program, which will build vessels to resupply Navy ships at sea. This marks a significant milestone since Hanwha acquired the Philadelphia shipyard in 2024. Investment Push The South Korean conglomerate has already invested over $200 million in workforce and capacity upgrades, with plans for a total $5 billion investment announced in 2025. Hanwha Shipping's U.S. unit has also ordered 10 Jones Act oil and chemical tankers from the yard, including two liquefied natural gas carriers - the first LNG vessels built in America in nearly 50 years. Why It Matters This contract demonstrates confidence in Hanwha's shipbuilding capabilities and reflects Seoul's broader $150 billion pledge to strengthen U.S. maritime infrastructure. For truck drivers and logistics professionals, this signals increased domestic maritime capacity and supply chain resilience. The NGLS program represents next-generation naval logistics, designed with proven technologies and commercial construction practices to support modern military operations in contested waters.
