Ohio Turnpike Cracks Down on 315 Carriers Dodging $5.2M in Tolls
Key Details Ohio Turnpike officials have identified 315 trucking companies that allegedly failed to pay $5.2 million in tolls over the past two years. The unpaid amounts per carrier range from $155,826 down to $5,018, reflecting multiple toll evasion incidents on the 241-mile corridor. Some carriers appear to be using chameleon tactics to evade detection. Why It Matters The Ohio Turnpike is a critical freight route linking the East and Midwest. Over 12 million commercial vehicles travel it annually, moving 80 million tons of cargo valued at $575 billion. When carriers dodge tolls, it undermines funding for road maintenance and safety improvements for all drivers. What Happens Next Unpaid tolls go to collections after 90 days, and vehicle registrations can be held until payment is received. Violators face a $100 civil penalty on top of owed amounts. The Ohio Attorney General and State Highway Patrol have been provided the list of offenders and are partnering to enforce compliance. Legal Warning Toll evasion is illegal in Ohio. Covering, obscuring or removing license plates, tampering with transponders, and bypassing toll points are all prohibited. The state's open road tolling system launched in April 2024 now captures license plate images, making evasion harder to hide.
