Illinois Community College Receives $77K Grant to Train Veteran Truck Drivers
Lincoln Land Community College has secured a $77,000 grant from the Department of Transportation to expand its trucking school program for military veterans. The funding will support approximately 17 veteran students as they pursue their commercial driver's licenses and enter the transportation industry. Why It Matters The initiative addresses a critical workforce shortage while providing meaningful career pathways for veterans transitioning to civilian employment. U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski emphasized the program's dual impact: "This announcement is particularly special because this program is focused on solving a real workforce shortage, while also uplifting our veterans and their families." Program Details The grant funds will cover tuition assistance and other essential support needs for participating veteran students. Dr. Charlotte Warren, LLCC president, stressed the comprehensive nature of the aid: "This is for students to help with tuition and other needs that they have while they go to school." Industry Impact The trucking sector plays a vital role in Illinois' economy, representing 338,000 jobs - roughly one in every 15 positions statewide. Matthew Hart, Executive Director of the Illinois Trucking Association, noted that drivers earn competitive wages, with the national average over-the-road salary reaching $75,000 annually. These good-paying positions offer stability for veteran families entering the workforce.
