Geely's AI Hybrid System Challenges Toyota's Market Dominance
Key Details China's Geely Automobile Holdings unveiled its new i-HEV hybrid platform, claiming superior fuel efficiency compared to Toyota's industry-leading Prius. The Emgrand sedan achieved 2.22 liters per 100 kilometers (105 mpg) during testing on Hainan island, outperforming Toyota's 2.53 liters per 100 kilometers in real-world conditions. Technology Advantage Geely's system integrates AI-powered intelligence with the vehicle's drivetrain, cockpit, and chassis into a centralized control system. The technology optimizes energy management and delivers an electric-like driving experience without requiring battery charging, the company stated. Why It Matters Hybrid sales are surging globally as drivers seek emissions reduction and lower fuel costs without committing to expensive electric vehicles. Toyota sold 4.4 million hybrids last year, representing over one-third of total sales, proving strong consumer demand. Production and Ambitions Geely plans immediate mass production rollout across popular models including the Boyue L, Xingyue L SUVs, and fifth-generation Emgrand. The company aims to become a top-five global automaker by decade's end, contrasting with rival BYD's all-in electric strategy. Geely maintains a multi-powertrain approach, continuing internal combustion engine, hybrid, and fuel cell development.
