Freightliner Cascadia Gets Advanced Collision Avoidance Tech in 2027
Key Details Daimler Truck North America is adding two major safety features to its Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 tractors starting next year. Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2 will be available options through the Detroit Assurance safety software suite. Orders open in Q3 2026, with production beginning January 2027. How It Works Cross Traffic Assist uses radar to detect vehicles crossing your path at intersections. The system provides visual and audible warnings, then can apply partial or full braking if configured to do so. Active Side Guard Assist 2 monitors for pedestrians, cyclists, and oncoming traffic during left turns, issuing alerts and applying brakes when hazards are detected. Why It Matters These upgrades address real-world accident scenarios that cost fleets money and endanger lives. Both systems can reduce collision severity or prevent accidents entirely. The fifth-generation Cascadia already comes standard with Active Brake Assist 6, which monitors 270 degrees around your truck and trailer using multiple radar units and a camera. What's Next Freightliner launched the fifth-gen Cascadia in October 2024 with orders opening April 2025. The company is rolling out these enhanced safety options as customer feedback shapes product development. Fleet managers interested in the latest safety tech should plan ahead for the Q3 2026 order window.
