FMCSA Revokes HERO ELD: What Drivers Need to Know Now
Key Details The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has revoked the HERO ELD from its approved devices list, effective April 2, 2026. This marks another addition to a growing roster of non-compliant devices removed since January 2025, when the agency began aggressive vetting. More than 56 devices have been pulled in that time period. Why It Matters FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs stated, "Devices that don't meet federal standards will be removed from our registered list. We've already taken off more than 56 devices, and we'll keep going to protect the integrity of the ELD program and to keep America's roads safe." What You Must Do Carriers have 60 days to transition away from HERO ELD. You must either revert to paper logs or switch to compliant logging software immediately. By June 2, 2026, you need a registered, approved ELD installed. Enforcement Begins Starting June 2, 2026, law enforcement can cite drivers using revoked ELDs for "no record of duty status" and place them out-of-service. This could impact your operating authority and safety record. Future Changes FMCSA promised in December 2025 to improve its vetting process, blocking non-compliant devices before they reach the approved list to prevent future replacements for drivers.
