FedEx Freight to Boost RNG Tractor Fleet Over Next Two Years
Key Details Incoming FedEx Freight CEO John Smith announced at the 2026 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo that LTL fleets will significantly increase investments in renewable natural gas tractors within the next two to four years. Smith emphasized that battery-electric and hydrogen-powered engines will also play supporting roles in the industry's transition to cleaner transportation. Why It Matters Smith stressed that the industry cannot wait for a single breakthrough technology to solve sustainability challenges. Instead, carriers must pursue multiple efficiency improvements simultaneously, including route optimization and clean mile initiatives. FedEx Freight currently operates about 30,000 vehicles across 365 locations with 26,000 service center doors. Business-First Approach Smith made clear that sustainability investments must make financial sense to be truly sustainable. The carrier has already optimized its network ahead of its June 1 spinoff from FedEx Corp, eliminating 39 service centers while adding nine locations in high-density freight areas. FedEx Freight also built a specialized sales force exceeding 500 employees to improve market share among small to medium businesses, grocery, healthcare, and data center segments as a standalone entity.
