FAA Certifies First 777-200 Freighter Conversion as Cargo Demand Surges
Key Details Mammoth Freighters LLC has received FAA certification for converting Boeing 777-200 passenger aircraft into dedicated cargo jets. This marks the first time a 777-200 converted freighter has been certified and built. Ethiopian Airlines has already signed a deal for two conversions, with work beginning next month. Market Opportunity The certification comes as airlines face urgent demand for widebody freighter capacity while older planes retire. Next-generation factory-built freighters from Boeing and Airbus are experiencing delays, and Boeing will end 767 freighter production by 2027. This creates a critical window for conversion opportunities. Commercial Momentum Jetran, a Texas-based aircraft dealer, is partnering with Mammoth Freighters to source and convert used 777-200s for major customers. Qatar Airways, DHL Express, and Ethiopian Airlines have already committed to purchasing converted aircraft. Jetran has acquired four additional 777-200s from Ethiopian for conversions. Why It Matters The 777-200 conversion program addresses a significant supply gap in long-haul cargo capacity. With strong backing from major logistics and airline operators, this conversion model could become a key strategy for fleet modernization across the industry during the next several years.
