ATRI Sets 2026 Research Agenda: Driver Coaching, Beyond Compliance, Weather Impact
Key Details The American Transportation Research Institute has unveiled its 2026 research priorities, focusing on critical issues facing trucking operations. The agenda includes examining driver coaching effectiveness, analyzing the "Beyond Compliance" safety recognition program, calculating regulatory costs, and assessing fleet preparedness for severe weather disruptions. Why It Matters These research initiatives directly impact your bottom line and operational strategy. Understanding which safety investments deliver real results, knowing the true cost of compliance, and preparing for weather challenges can help fleets make smarter decisions about resource allocation and risk management. Beyond Compliance Program ATRI will investigate potential incentives for carriers participating in the Beyond Compliance program, which recognizes fleets exceeding minimum safety standards. The agency will develop pilot test methodology and evaluation plans. This differs from earlier "alternative compliance" concepts by offering recognition without regulatory relief. Leadership Transition As ATRI begins this research agenda, longtime president Rebecca Brewster announced her retirement in early 2027 after 34 years with the organization, including 25 years as president and COO. A search committee led by Brenda Neville, Iowa Motor Truck Association president and CEO, will identify her successor beginning in May.
