Arkansas Trucking Group Demands Ban on Out-of-State Non-Domiciled CDLs
Key Details American Truckers United is escalating its push to ban all non-domiciled CDLs recognized in Arkansas, arguing that Act 604, passed last year, doesn't go far enough. The group wants the state to stop accepting non-domiciled credentials issued elsewhere and reject B-1 business visas held by many Mexican drivers. ATU is also calling for fines and truck impoundment for violators. Why It Matters ATU co-founder Shannon Everett contends that unvetted and unqualified drivers from Mexico lack proper motor vehicle records, drug testing, and training while operating on Arkansas highways. The group is frustrated with the pace of federal reform and wants state-level action immediately. The Response State Rep. R.J. Hawk, who sponsored Act 604, argues the law is already working effectively. Since August, it has placed 1,251 drivers out of service for English proficiency failures and arrested 386 drivers with fraudulent CDLs. Hawk maintains that federal-level issues like NAFTA make this a matter for Congress, not individual states. Bottom Line While both sides agree illegal driving is a problem, they disagree on whether Act 604 is sufficient or if Arkansas should take unilateral action to reject out-of-state non-domiciled credentials.
