Accuride's ProShield XGT Coating Fights Filiform Corrosion Starting 2026
Key Details Accuride unveiled ProShield XGT, a new aluminum wheel anti-corrosion coating designed to combat filiform corrosion that reduces wheel lifespan and increases downtime. The Michigan-based manufacturer will make coated wheels publicly available in Q2 2026, with availability varying by OEM requirements. Why It Matters Filiform corrosion is sneaky threadlike damage that forms under coatings when chips or scratches occur. Once exposed to warm, humid air, it spreads quickly underneath the metal, often going unnoticed until significant damage occurs. What Makes It Different ProShield XGT resists chips, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It also withstands acids, bases, oils, fuels, brake fluid, and road salts while featuring a hydrophobic surface that repels water and contaminants. The coating requires no maintenance refreshing throughout the vehicle's life. Next Steps Fleet trials have been running since April 2025, with production launching at Accuride's Erie, Pennsylvania facility. The company has filed for patent protection, which could open doors for the coating's use on other rolling stock and equipment. Accuride redesigned adhesive for identification stickers to accommodate the new surface technology.
